Access UIC’s rare books

Rare books are unique or valuable materials maintained for future generations of researchers. You can view rare books in the Special Collections and University Archives’s reading rooms at the Richard J. Daley Library in Chicago or at the Library of the Health Sciences-Chicago.

Access a rare book

If you search for a book on the Library Catalog and the location on the catalog record says “Special Collections,” that book is likely a rare book. View a list of our specific rare book collections.

Check to see which library the book is at.

Visit Special Collections to access the book.

Can I check out rare books?

No. Because the rare books are valuable, unique, or very fragile, you may access them only in on our reading rooms.

Our reading rooms have special hours

For the most up-to-date information on when we are open, see Daley Library (hours and dates open) and the Library of the Health Sciences-Chicago (hours and days open).
