Item Loan Periods

Loans vary by item, by location, and by user type. For most regularly circulating materials, though, faculty and graduate students may borrow them for 16 weeks and undergraduates for 4 weeks. Borrowing periods may be shortened if a recall is placed on the item.

UIC items may be renewed up to ten (10) times.  When the renewal limit is reached, the patron must bring the item(s) to the library.  A library staff member will check the items in, and if the patron wants to take the UIC items out again, the staff member can re-check them out.

I-Share items may be renewed up to 3 times by students and up to 6 times by Faculty and Academic Employees.  Non print materials may be checked out for 2 weeks, however, no renewals are allowed.  Upon reaching the renewal limit, I-Share items must be returned.

Consult the tables below for information on loan periods.

Overdue Materials and Fines

All users are responsible for tracking due dates for materials they have borrowed and for returning items on time. Though the Library sends borrowers courtesy e-mail notices close to the due date for items, failure to receive a notice does not entitle the borrower to an extended due date.

The Library does not charge daily overdue fines for regularly circulating materials. Overdue fines may apply for other circulating materials such as course reserve materials.

When a borrower has a regularly circulating item 40 days past the due date, the item is considered lost. The Library will bill the user a replacement fee of the items and charge a $25 non-refundable fee for each. The replacement fee will be waived or refunded if the item is returned. Payment of the replacement fee does not confer ownership of the item to the borrower.

All borrowers are subject to fines and fees, including faculty.

The Library does not collect payments for fines and fees. All billing is done by campus Accounts Receivable.
