Using non-UIC Libraries
UIC students, faculty, and staff have borrowing privileges at other libraries beyond UIC. UIC users are subject to the lending policies of these other libraries, including any fines and or fees, when borrowing materials from them. Not all users are eligible to use all of the libraries listed below.
Request Materials from I-Share
The I-Share catalog allows borrowing from many university and college libraries within Chicago and across Illinois.
Use the Request This Title option, located towards the top of a catalog record, to request an item be delivered to your local UIC Library location.
Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is available to UIC faculty, staff and current students who need materials that are not available through the UIC Library.
Before submitting an interlibrary loan request, check the Library Catalog for book and journal titles. Also check I-Share for available holdings at other Illinois libraries.
To submit and track an interlibrary loan request, select the library site you regularly use.

Other Libraries (On-Site Use Only)
UIC students, faculty, and staff have access and on-site use privileges at other libraries beyond UIC. UIC users are subject to the use policies of these other libraries. Not all users are eligible to use all of the libraries listed below.
- Center for Research Libraries (CRL). The CRL is a consortium of North American universities, colleges, and independent research libraries. The consortium acquires and preserves newspapers, journals, documents, archives, and other traditional and digital resources for research and teaching. These resources are then made available to member institutions cooperatively through interlibrary loan and electronic delivery or through on-site access at the CRL’s facility in Chicago. Any UIC student, faculty, or staff may, with prior arrangement and a valid i-card, access CRL materials on site. For more information on accessing CRL collections, please consult their Web pages.
- Metropolitan Library System (MLS). Any UIC user may walk in and, with a valid i-card and a note from UIC Library, may use a print resource housed at an MLS library. The user must establish that the library is the only one within an approximate 25 mile radius of Chicago to own that item. The process is mediated by the MLS.
- Newberry Library. Any UIC user with a valid i-card and a research need may access the resources of the Newberry Library on site. The Newberry’s collections do not circulate.
Non-Illinois Institutions
- CIC libraries: includes the University of Michigan, Indiana University, the University of Wisconsin, and other Big Ten schools. Faculty only, requires a CIC faculty card, available from the circulation desks of the Daley, Science, and LHS Libraries.
- OCLC/RLAC libraries agreement: faculty only, requires an OCLC card authorized by the home library and available from the circulation desks of the Daley, Science, and LHS Libraries. See participating institutions.
