Academic authors, copyrights explored

Michael Carroll, professor of law and director of the Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property at American University's Washington College of Law, presents the UIC Library’s Nakata Lecture on Thursday, April 22, 2010, at 2 p.m., in the Daley Library Reserve Reading Room.

Prof. Carroll will address the subject Academic Authors and Their Copyrights: Recent Developments in Scholarly Communication.

Faculty, instructors, students, and researchers in academic institutions continually face questions about copyright as they develop instructional materials, research findings, creative works, and products with commercial potential. Who owns the materials created in universities and colleges? How can knowledge be disseminated for maximum benefits to both copyright holders and the common good? What are the copyright issues in the online environment?

Prof. Carroll teaches courses on intellectual property and law in cyberspace and has published articles about music copyright, patent injunctions, fair use, and copyright law in academic publishing. His presentations to academic audiences include topics such as authors' rights to use and share the scholarly materials they create, creativity and innovation in the digital age, and the relationship between intellectual property and information justice.

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Linda Naru@uic.edu or 312 413 0394., field_56ba6f8fdb00c
