Picture Chicago shows early 20th century city

Picture Chicago is an online collection of images published in books about Chicago during the early 1900s. The collection includes subjects such as Chicago gangsters, politicians, the first taxicab in the city, the devastating 1904 fire at the Iroquois Theater, the reference room of the Chicago Public Library in 1911, stately North Shore residences, and draft plans to straighten the Chicago River.

The photographs and drawings in Picture Chicago are linked to the digitized texts in which the graphic materials were published.

Picture Chicago is a joint project of the libraries of the Chicago and Urbana campuses of the University of Illinois and is hosted on the UIUC Library Web site. Funding to support building this image collection was provided by a 2009 Collections Enhancement and Access Award from the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI)., field_56ba6f8fdb00c
