Shortage Designation: HPSA & MUA/MUP

Access to quality medical care is always in high demand - this is an issue in some places more than others. If you are interested in finding out which US populations have a determined need for increased medical care, try searching the HPSA database or the MUA/MUP database.

"HPSA" stands for "health professional shortage areas". "MUA/MUP" stands for "medically underserved areas/medically underserved populations". The databases are maintained by the Health Resources and Services Administration, part of the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Searches are conducted by state, and can be narrowed by county. The main site provides background information on the databases, including a dictionary of terms as well as the federal guidelines for determining HPSA and MUA/MUP. The HPSA database is updated weekly and the MUA/MUP database is updated continuously, arguably making them the most current resources available.
